Affordable Bajaj Chetak surfaces before May launch

The Bajaj Chetak’s most recent update came in 2023 and it brought in cosmetic changes, more features and more range. We have now received images of what appear to be a more affordable variant of the Chetak that will soon go on sale.

  1. Spied variant loses some features
  2. Gets more vibrant colours
  3. Gets monochrome LCD unit

While the overall silhouette remains the same, Bajaj appears to have made changes to the equipment list to bring down the price of the Chetak. This new variant also comes with a choice of bright and cheerful colours.

For starters, Bajaj has given this variant a set of steel wheels that are mated to a set of drum brakes, as opposed to the alloy wheels and disc brakes available on the current variants. This version has also ditched the key slot in favour of a more conventional and cost-effective physical key slot.

Bajaj has also replaced the coloured LCD with the monochrome display that originally debuted on the scooter in 2020. More cost saving can be seen in the dual open cubbies that replace the lockable glove box.

Currently, we don’t have any information about the changes made to its powertrain, but it's possible that this variant will have a slight reduction in performance to increase range. This scooter also doesn't have a hub motor, so it remains to be seen what sort of performance it would offer. We expect to see the same 2.9kWh battery pack from the Chetak Urbane that has a claimed IDC range of 113km.

For reference, the current Bajaj Chetak can be had in two variants – Premium and Urbane. The Premium variant comes with a 3.2kWh battery that boasts of an IDC range of 126km and this variant comes with a TFT display. The Premium variant is priced at Rs 1.47 lakh (ex-showroom, India) while the Urbane variant costs Rs 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom, India). We expect that this version will be priced below the Urbane when it launches in May.
