Toyota India announced that it has dispatched a combined total of one lakh units of the Glanza and the Urban Cruiser. The Glanza went on sale in 2019, while the Urban Cruiser hit showrooms in 2020.

  • Glanza, Urban Cruiser wholesales cross one lakh units
  • Both models are built by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota
  • Major updates expected for both models this year

As part of the alliance between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, the Glanza was introduced in the market in June 2019. A product built and supplied by Maruti Suzuki, the Glanza is essentially a rebadged Baleno, built by Maruti Suzuki and supplied to Toyota. The hatchback is also exported to markets like South Africa where it is sold as the Toyota Starlet. Around 65,000 units of the hatchback have been despatched in India alone, according to Toyota. With the updated Baleno expected to launch sometime in February, the Glanza will follow suit.

The Urban Cruiser is the second product supplied by Maruti Suzuki to Toyota India. Essentially a rebadged Vitara Brezza, the Urban Cruiser helped Toyota get a foot in the competitive compact SUV market since its launch back in 2020. A heavily updated Brezza is expected to be introduced in the coming months and one can expect a major revamp of the Urban Cruiser to follow. Around 35,000 units of the compact SUV have been despatched to Toyota dealers so far, according to the manufacturer.

Maruti Suzuki-Toyota partnership: what else is incoming?

As part of their partnership, Maruti Suzuki supplies the Ertiga to Toyota, which the latter sells in the South African market as the Rumion. Maruti Suzuki also supplies the Ciaz to Toyota for the South African and Middle-eastern markets, which is sold as the Belta. Both models are expected to come to India sometime this year.

Additionally, both brands will together enter the highly competitive midsize SUV space this year by introducing their rivals to the Hyundai Creta. While all the aforementioned products are supplied by Maruti Suzuki to Toyota, the upcoming midsize SUV twins will be built and supplied by Toyota to Maruti Suzuki. Read more on that here.
